CR Associates prepared a trail usage count plan and performed data collection to determine user volumes along with the City of San Clemente’s Marblehead Trail Network. Two-hour manual counts were taken on a typical weekday and weekend. Counters observed the number of pedestrians, cyclists, and users of other means of locomotion, such as roller skates or skateboards. Counters were positioned along key waypoints throughout the Marblehead Trail Network, to inform knowledge of the relative popularity of different trails, such as those along the upper, mid, or lower portions of the coastal bluff upon which the network is situated. Two-hour counts were extrapolated to average daily counts, using regional temporal patterns. The results were used to determine forecast 2030 trail volumes, for use by local and state agencies to inform land use and conservation-related decisions within the community.
